The mud-cure establishment in Pomorie is built in 1925 and in 1983 is built the new sanatorium-resort complex which appears to be the biggest mud-cure centre on the Balkan Peninsula. Due to the unique natural product – the firth mud formed here thousands of years ago, the splendid combination of this richness with the sea and the modern medical base with highly qualified personnel makes it an attractive place for treatment and relaxation of Bulgarians and foreigners.
The curative firth mud, peloid (town of Pelos – mud, slime) represents valuable natural product formed by organic and non-organic compounds with the participation of chemical biological and microbiological processes formed on the bottom of the Lake Pomorie. The curative mud of Pomorie is used also by the ancient Thracians and the Romans and it is black, fine oily, plastic, adhesive mass, rich of sulphuretted hydrogen, magnesium, chlorides, calcium, potassium, sodium, sulphates , iron compounds, hormones etc.
The essence of the mud-curing comes down to the complex impact of all factors of the curative mud among which main role play the thermal, chemical and mechanical factors.
Methods of treatment applied in Sanatorium- resort complex Pomorie
Application method – complete application; mud trousers; partial applications.
Bath method – mud baths – prepared by the mixing of mud with tap water, salt-water, sea water. Different mud dilution is used in proportion 2:1;
Vaginal method - It belongs to the group of cavity mud-curing methods, by its application is available more effective penetration of the chemical factors of the mud in the organism and more intensive local thermal effect.
Endorectal method
Egyptian method
Electrophoresis with curative mud
Method of the mud compresses – seldom used here which is not justified from therapeutical point of view.
The vaginal and endorectal methods of mud-curing deserve special attention not only for the diseases of the female and male genital systems but also for other deceases in view of the greater possibility for resorption of the substances of the mud through the skin and the mucous membrane.
The mud of Pomorie
Pomorie was a healing centre in the remote past, famous mainly with the curative factors of the firth mud, sea water and sea climate.
The curative mud is produced from the firth lake located in vicinity to the town. It represents natural product, formed by organic and non-organic compounds with the participation of different chemical, biological and microbiological processes in the firth lake of Pomorie. The mud of Pomorie distinguishes for its fine structure, high plasticity, alkaline reaction and scent of sulphuretted hydrogen. The color is saturated black. In it is found significant quantity of sulphuretted hydrogen, magnesium (0.15 gr. per 100 gr. mud); chlorides (1.7 gr. per 100 gr. mud); calcium (0.03 gr. per 100 gr. mud); sodium (0.98 gr. per 100 gr. mud); suphate (0.2 gr. per 100 gr. mud). Furthermore, in it are found traces of iron, silica, estrogens. The essence of the mud-curing comes down to the complex impact of all factors of the curative mud among which the main role play the thermal, chemical and mechanical factors.
The curative factors have a specific effect on the organism mainly in nerve-reflex way with the unlocking intimate adaptive reactions at which the endocrine mechanisms and hypothalamus - hypophyseal adrenocortical, hypophyseal- tireoidal, simpatico-adrenal chains participate most.
Under the influence of the curative mud procedures occurs activation of the metabolite processes.
Mud-curing in Pomorie
The resort is famous since the remote past for which speak various archeological findings. The firth mud with which it is famous is used in all ages and up to recent days. The town is situated 22 km from Burgas with which it is connected by regular bus line.
On September 13th, 1905 Doctor Petar Stoyanov rediscovers and in several years surveys Lake Pomorie. It is formed after a catastrophic earthquake in 740 B.C. The mud-cure establishment is built after the rediscovery. Pomorie strengthens as a national sea mud-curing resort. The mud-curing is complicated and versatile process. The curative effect results from the complex impact of the chemical, biological, electro dynamical and mechanical factors of the curative mud.
The metabolism is improved as well as the trophics of the tissues. The level of cholesterol and the blood sugar falls down. It stimulates the genital system and many other processes in the human organism. The lye-therapy treats diseases of the locomotory system, the female genital system, kidneys and urethra etc. The mud curing and the lye therapy require specialized technique and technology for mud and lye production. Their application also requires special devices.
To these basic procedures are included also many additional ones which are related to the treatment. Electrical treatment, massage, medical sports, fitness, submerged massage, mud baths, mud applications, salt-water baths and different kinds of functional tests. All these procedures can be prophylactic, without proved disease or any symptoms. The sanatorium complex has excellent bed space of 200 beds.
While in 1939 are treated 682 sick people, in 1959 – 6045, and in 1970 around 12 600, today these digits are much higher.
RESORT FACTORS
The climate is typical for the sea area. The summer is moderately warm and the winter – soft. The blanket of snow almost never remains. The spring is breezy and warm. The average annual temperature is around 13 ? С.
The curative mud is sedimentary firth, black, oily to the touch, with scent of sulphuretted hydrogen; it has siliceous-carbonate structure and low content of gypsum.
The beach is long around 5 km and has average width 30 m. It is covered with dark sand due to which it absorbs strongly the sun rays and heats until hotness. Its color is a result of the great content of iron and manganese. The sea bottom has a small inclination and that's why bathing in the sea is comfortable.
ADDITIONAL CURATIVE FACTORS
The apparatus physiotherapy with all kinds of specialized modern devices and methods; curative sports which is widely combined with the climate-treatment and the other curative factors. In the sport halls and outdoors are used different methods – group and individual activities, different type of massages etc.
Dietary and rational nutrition in modern block for nutrition, built up to the modern requirements. The block is managed by a doctor- nutritionist, technologist on nutrition and culinary specialists.
A particular role has the attendance to the cinema, theatre, variety shows, exhibitions etc. Independent, half-day and full-day walks and trips to natural and historical sights and to the close sea resorts are regularly organized.
INDICATIONS FOR RESORT TREATMENT
All kind of the locomotory system diseases (with the exception of the sharp and specific ones), periphery nervous system diseases, gynecological diseases and sterility as well as skin diseases.
Medical Institution
The resort polyclinic is modern mud-cure establishment in which are performed different procedures as applications, baths, Egyptian, gynecological and other procedures. Lye therapy, electro and light therapy, massage and others are also used.
A modern well furnished sanatorium with closed swimming pool.
A boarding sanatorium resort treatment with the use of private apartments and modern nutrition block.
The resort has direct telephone connection with all villages and towns in the country and abroad.
